Proposed West Virgina Hunting Seasons for 2016

Here is an article for 2016 West Virginia deer season as you plan for days off work for the upcoming deer season.  Also of particular interest is changes proposed for Gilmer Counter (Randy's farm location).
Six unlimited-permit counties that had three-deer limits in 2015 would have three-deer bag limits in 2016, with an added stipulation that hunters would be required to kill an antlerless deer before they would be allowed to kill a second buck: Gilmer, Hardy, Lewis, Upshur, Wetzel and Wirt - See more at: http://www.wvgazettemail.com/news/20160221/dnr-proposes-more-liberal-deer-bear-turkey-seasons-for-2016#sthash.3pUNVR3b.dpuf

Elk Terminolgy

Hunter's have to dream.  Dream of the big trophy of a lifetime.

I consider myself to be a "meat hunter" meaning I will harvest the best animal that the hunting experience provides at a given time in order to put food on the table. That doesn't mean I don't want to harvest a trophy for bragging rights, but I know trophies aren't the best for eating.  Filling the wall or the freezer are both important.  With that in mind, how well do you know elk nomenclature?

When it comes to trophy elk there are 3 main levels of distinction in order of Royal, Imperial, and Monarch.

A ROYAL elk has SIX points.

An IMPERIAL elk has SEVEN points.

A MONARCH elk has EIGHT points

The current world record is called SPIDER ELK was 9x14 with 9" base
was shot in 2008 by Denny Austad in Utah on public ground.

Maybe the easiest feature to look for that defines a mature elk is the WHALE TAIL.   Older bull elk have this identifier on the last tine of their rack.  It is the only tine that dips down on a bull elk.

Another feature to look for is the ROYAL TINE.  Sometimes also called the SWORD POINT, this tine.  It is the fourth tine back from the front.  On a big elk is will be massive and thick.  When dreaming about your elk hunt, this is what you should envision.

It would be nice to be able to slay the next Elkzilla (although Kirk will tell you that he will) so let's look at the requirements for a meat elk in unit 13 during 4th rifle season.

No cow tags are available for our unit 4th rifle so mark it off your list and not just any male is legal.  The following video helps define what we need in our unit for a legal harvest.
