Selected Tents for Colorado Elk

The tent hunt is finally over after tons of research and discussion.  We ended up with two very similar tents that hit in the middle ground of what we wanted for hunting shelters.

Scott L. ended up with the Cabela's Alaskan Guide Geodesic Tent.  This tent is rated for 6 people and uses the lighter/stronger aluminum poles.  It has great reviews from hunters like us that used it for the same purposes.

Scott Y. went with the same style, different model called Cabela's Alaskan Instinct Tent also with aluminum poles for the same reasons.

The "middle ground" was something semi-light weight (20 lbs. vs 80 lbs. +) that could be packed in on future hunts.  We sacrificed weight for room for 6 hunters and their gear.  Don't let the thumbnail size pictures fool you.  These are pretty big tents providing needed space for big game hunts.  On future Brotherhood hunts, with less people, we can reduce down to a single tent.

The main consideration that both of these tents have covered in spades is bad weather, especially snow and high winds.  These tents were built for, and have a track record for, these conditions.  Fourth rifle season in Colorado could involved rough winter weather so we need to be prepared.

Slowly not surely we are getting things ready for the big trip.  Working out our shelters is a big step.

  2. I set the Instinct tent up yesterday to check it out and see how much time it takes for set up. Took me over an hour first time, but I took my time and read directions. It will easily go up in half that time in the future now that I know how it works. Directions say it's a two person job so Amy helped setting up poles catty-corner from me to do it. I might be able to do it myself now that I understand tent design, but probably won't be using 6 man tent by myself though. Ordered an inside ground protector to keep floor in good shape. Also will get a ground trap to protect the floor.

  3. After Scott L setup and estimated the space he'd need for 3 people, he decided to go bigger. He ended up with the largest Instinct tent from Cabela's that also allows the a stove. Guess who's tent we'll be hanging out in?
